Kinteki Shuzo is located in the town of Shintotsukawa, which has a rich history dating back to 1889 (Meiji 22). At that time, a catastrophic flood devastated Totsukawa Village in Nara Prefecture, leaving its residents without homes. Seeking a new beginning, the villagers migrated to Hokkaido and began cultivating the untamed wilderness.
Sixteen years later, with food production stabilized, a shared desire emerged: “Let’s brew our own sake.” In 1906 (Meiji 39), the first corporate sake brewery in Hokkaido, Shintotsukawa Sake Brewing Company, was established. In 1951 (Showa 26), it was renamed Kinteki Shuzo Co., Ltd., continuing to the present day.
Kinteki Shuzo focuses on using local resources—rice, water, and people—to craft its sake. The brewery takes pride in producing handmade sake in small batches, using local sake rice varieties such as Ginpu and Kitashizuku, which originated in Hokkaido and are grown in Shintotsukawa, the birthplace of Hokkaido's sake rice. Each batch is carefully and meticulously brewed, ensuring a deep connection to the region's heritage.
